Apple Magazine – At this time of year, everyone gets caught up talking about the more artistic movies that are being nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globes. But those aren’t necessarily the moviews people are actually going to see. Some nominated movies seem like they’re never even mentioned until they receive nominations. The movies people are really hearing about and going to see in the theaters may not necessarily be artistic, but they are fun.

People watch movies to escape and relax. They want comedy, action. Hollywood went with their tried-and-true favorites this year. Adam Sandler had not just one movie, but two in theaters this year. New movies were released in the Transformers, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hangover, and Twilight series. Remakes were made of old favorites such as Arthur and Green Hornet.

Transformers : Dark of the Moon and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 each made over a billion dollars worldwide. My week with Marilyn, nominated for a Golden Globe best picture award, made just $15 million. That’s a huge difference. Whta the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decides is good entertainment is ultimately not what people are paying to see.
